About Us

It is the vision of Sickle Cell Association to provide preventative comprehensive services to our clients and the community at large. The comprehensive service model has proven to be extremely effective in other cities in drastically reducing the incidence of painful episodes among persons with sickle cell anemia.

Through our partnerships with area hospitals, HMOs, physicians and community-based agencies, we are greatly improving the quality of life for our clients while offering structured educational counseling for those persons who may not be informed about the disease.

Facts About Sickle Cell Disease

  • Sickle cell disease is an inherited disease that affects the shape and function of red blood cells

  • In a person who has SCD, their red blood cells change from the usual round shape to a twisted or sickle like shape

  • People with sickle cell trait are healthy carriers of a small amount of sickle hemoglobin in their blood, but not enough to change the shape of the red blood cell. They would not know if they carry the sickle cell trait unless they were tested.

  • Both parents that have the trait have a 1 in 4 chance of having a baby with SCD
